When do I have to start implementing the new BC curriculum in my classroom?
The new K–9 curriculum is mandatory beginning this school year, 2016. The new 10–12 curriculum will be mandatory beginning in the 2017–2018 school year.
How significant are the changes to the new BC curriculum and do I need new resources to implement it?
The curriculum has been redesigned to place greater emphasis on the ‘doing’ in each subject area—the development of subject-specific skills, processes, and habits of mind. There are five key pieces to the new curriculum: goals, core competencies, big ideas, curricular competencies, and content knowledge—all infused with First Peoples’ knowledge and perspectives. A focus on enduring understandings helps create space for students and teachers to localize learning, and for deeper, curiosity-driven exploration of each subject area. Education is evolving and Nelson understands that educators are at the forefront of change. That’s why our new suite of resources for Mathematics, English Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science has been specifically developed to support you and your students as you uncover the new curriculum in your classroom. How long has Nelson been working on the research and development of resources to support the new BC curriculum?
Nelson has been a proud partner in BC classrooms for more than 20 years. Our research and development around the new curriculum began in 2013, when early drafts were posted. During the past three years, as we’ve worked to deepen our understanding of the changes taking place, and to design and build new resources to help you manage them, we’ve maintained an ongoing conversation with educators from schools and districts across the province. Today our BC team has close to 100 educators involved and continues to grow!
Why did Nelson develop supplemental resources for some disciplines and comprehensive resources for others? What degree of curriculum coverage do these new resources provide?
Before developing our suite of resources, Nelson conducted extensive analysis of the new BC curricula for Mathematics, English Language Arts, Socials Studies, and Science. In Mathematics and English Language Arts, where curriculum change was determined to be more limited and existing classroom resources still useable, new supplemental resources were developed. In Social Studies and Science, where curriculum was determined to have changed significantly, and current resources either do not exist or are no longer congruent, new comprehensive series are being published. When used in conjunction with existing classroom resources, BC Math Boost K–7 and Under One Sun K–8 provide complete coverage of the new Mathematics and English Language Arts curricula. Nelson Socials K–7 and Nelson Science K–7 are designed to provide complete coverage of the new Social Studies and Science curricula.
How do the new Nelson resources support learning from local First Peoples?
Students and teachers are at the forefront of Reconciliation efforts in BC and across Canada. From the very beginning of our resource development process, Nelson has partnered with First Peoples educators from schools and districts in BC to ensure that the voices, knowledge, and perspectives of local First Peoples are authentically integrated in our resources.
Are the new Nelson resources adapted from other sources?
BC Math Boost K–7, Under One Sun K–8, Nelson Socials K–7, and Nelson Science K–7 were built from the ground up by—and for—BC educators to honour the letter and intent of the new curriculum, and the progressive student-centred teaching practices for which BC educators are known.
